What does Oppo think of the new VOLT price?

In a perfect world, the VOLT would have been priced more reasonably from the start. That didn't happen. Honestly, the first few Prius years weren't all that perfect price wise either. That said, do you think that the new price drop will spur sales enough to keep GM working on 2nd and 3rd gen vehicles?

So a heavily taxpayer subsidized car that sells for roughly half it's cost to build... now is going to be even MORE subsidized, because nobody is buying them now?

Great.

Like a large part of the population, despite being interested in cars, I have never stopped to think how much the Volt costs. You know what? I still don't care.

All I know, is that if you made me spent my own money on a hybrid commuter, I would drive a Prius.

The price drop is almost meaningless - they've had a 5k factory incentive on them for months, so I guess they're just making it permanent. Still, it allows them extra room for adding in future incentives without it being obvious that the car is discounted 6,7 or 8k over the original msrp.

At this price with the tax break, it's a pretty tempting car for the wife. If I had garage space...

Yep, same here. I couldn't tell you what any of these hybrid/electric cars cost (except for the gorgeous Tesla) and really don't care.

And if it were my money, I'd have a Prius C if forced into a hybrid.

Definitely makes it more enticing.

I've always liked the Volt, but at any price I never considered it because I currently live in an apartment, so I can't do the home charging, negating a big benefit of it and turning it into a too-expensive car for my immediate needs.

Once I get a house, though? Definitely on my short list.

I like the idea behind it but I'm still waiting for a plug-in, supercapacitor/battery hybrid CRZ. I may ask a little bit too much though...

I don't think the Volt price or sales really mattered in the first place.

Its a halo-effect car; really a lot like having a V8 Camaro or a Corvette sit in a showroom to draw in a certain crowd, even though the lion's share of sales are going to be from people who walk in and take a look at the bolder cars, see the price tag, realize they cant float the payments, and consider/possibly opt for a 6-cylinder Camaro or Malibu (bad example, but you know what I mean) or something.

In that same way, the Volt draws in a certain crowd for its hype and when most realize its out of their reach, they consider/opt for a Cruze (closely related to the Volt), Sonic, or Spark instead. Initially, its an expensive and risky tactic, but it benefits brand sales at-large.

In a perfect world, Volt would have been a stand alone brand, marketed as the high tech gadget it is, and sold at a price appropriate for the engineering involved and as the technological advance it is. Nothing has hurt the Volt IMHO like the bowtie on its grille.

No. Corvette isn't a social engineering agenda project that people won't otherwise accept. Some people actually like that premise, and it has real performance, so it must be vilified as the gas guzzling, selfish, capitalistic, un-caring, cruel, wasteful, and un-necessary, world-destroying problem.

Truth has no bearing in this... otherwise Volt's lack of viability and appeal, would have meant it would never have been built in the first place, let alone it's lack of sales would have gotten it cancelled by now.

Indeed, and I have heard the Prius C actually drives quite well.

I feel the same way. If I get the new job I am angling for, I will be able to purchase one and never use a drop of gas. Almost ever. That's enticing for a guy who now spends over 300 per month in fuel alone.

I agree. My Cruze ECO can get up to 45 mpg if I hyper mile slightly on road trips. Not bad. For the price difference, I can buy a lot of fuel.

I don't live in an apartment but what has gotten me is the cost of installation of said fast chargers.

Yeah if I was forced into a Prius it would have to be the C based almost solely on looks alone.

I seriously considered buy one last fall. I could have made it to work and back on one charge. If we would have been 2 weeks earlier and been able to cash in on those infamous sub $300/month leases, I would have grabbed it.

I enjoyed driving it.

Side Note: Out of the 4 dealers we visited, and the 4 salesmen we talked to, only ONE called us back as promised. Soooo...maybe they don't really care all that much about selling them? Beats me.

Same here. I wouldn't use a drop of gas with my new commute to my new job. I may still consider it but I need to make sure of how much I can get back on my taxes. It would make a huge difference.

Yeah, and it's so sketchy how they determine it. Not at all how they make it sound when pumping the incentives.
